Schizomavella cornuta

Schizomavella cornuta is an encrusting bryozoan that forms broad, often extensive sheet-like colonies which are frequently thick and nodular. Colonies are cream in colour and composed of either a single or multiple layers of autozooids. Autozooids are 0.39-0.56 by 0.23-0.35 mm.

The precise geographic distribution of Schizomavella cornuta is uncertain, owing to former confusion with Schizomavella auriculata. The species is common on northwest European coasts, and known from various localities in the Mediterranean, although many of the records are confused with the numerous other species of Schizomavella.

The species is able to colonise hard substrates, ranging from shallow sublittoral water to offshore habitats.
