Schizomavella discoidea (Busk, 1859)

Morphology: 

Schizomavella discoidea is an encrusting bryozoan that forms small, subcircular patches, normally composed of a single layer of autozooids and rarely developing multiple layers. Autozooids are rectangular to hexagonal or irregular in outline. They are 0.3-0.5 by 0.2-0.3 mm.

Distribution: 

Schizomavella discoidea is distributed along the western coasts of Britain, ranging north to Shetland. It occurs widely in the western English Channel, but is absent from the North Sea. Outside of British waters it is known from Madeira, throughout the Mediterranean and the Gulf of St. Malo.

Habitat: 

The species is able to colonise stones and shells in offshore habitats. It has been reported from depths between 20-80 m.
