Abstract:

This paper surveys the investigations of the brood chambers (ovicells) in cheilostomate bryozoans starting with their first description by John Ellis in 1755 up to the present. The controversy about ovicellar structure, function, and formation is considered in detail, and development of modem terminology is traced. The importance of ovicell studies for understanding the phylogeny and evolution of reproductive patterns in Cheilostomata is discussed.
