Morphology:
Escharella octodentata is an encrusting bryozoan that forms small, round, silvery patches. The small autozooids are oval to hexagonal and strongly convex. They range in size from 0.4-0.65 by 0.3-0.45 mm, with eight long slender spines.
Distribution:
Escharella octodentata is a northern boreal species that has been recorded from western Norway, Faroe, Shetland, the Hebridean continental slope and along the western coast of Britain to the Bay of Biscay. It extends into the western Mediterranean.
Habitat:
The species is able to colonise stones, shells and dead coral. It is found in subtidal waters from 50 to approximately 750 metres (Hughes 2001; Tilbrook 2006)
