General description:
Tegella unicornis is an encrusting bryozoan species, found in subtidal waters around the northern part of the British Isles. The species is lightly calcified and the colonies form irregular sheets spreading over the substrate. Tegella unicornis is able to colonise stones, shells and fronds of Laminaria kelp species.
The species is typical of the boreal-Arctic zone, where it has a circumpolar distribution. It is widespread in the northern North Sea, and occurs on the Danish and German coasts. In Britain it extends south to Northumberland, but is thought to be absent from western shores and the English Channel.
