De Blauwe (2009) vond kolonies van Bowerbankia die overeenkomen met de beschrijving van B. gracilis maar waarbij de embryo’s geel zijn in Zeebrugge en Arcachon (Frankrijk), ze zijn ook in Swansea (Wales) aangetroffen (Hayward, 1985). Volgens Ryland (pers. com.) is dit mogelijks een onbeschreven soort. Morfologisch, DNA en ecologisch onderzoek naar Bowerbankia is wenselijk.
