Loppens (1906) vermeldt ze als algemeen op stenen en schelpen en vooral op de hydroïde Abietinaria abietina (zeeden). In de collectie van het KBIN werden op twee zeedennetjes Turbicellepora avicularis gevonden terwijl Loppens (1906) deze soort niet vermeldt. In de periode 1899-1911 werden meerdere kolonies verzameld op de Vlaamse Banken. De dichtst gekende locatie waar levende kolonies zijn aangetroffen, is Ambleteuse (Noord-Frankrijk) waar ze op het lage strand voorkomen aan de onderzijde van grote stenen. Overleden kolonies, als puimsteentjes met een lengte van 1 tot 7 cm, worden regelmatig aangetroffen bij staalnames op de Kwintebank en de Hinderbanken (zie ook Turbicellepora avicularis). Verse kolonies spoelen in België nu vaak aan op plastic, netten en riemwiervoetjes (De Blauwe, 2005). Uit Nederland gemeld op hydroïden, kurk, stenen en wormkokers van Scheveningen, Katwijk, Noordwijk en Ameland (Lacourt, 1949). Op Texel spoelden 4 kolonies aan op een touw (de Ruijter, 2006) en tussen Castricum en Egmond aan Zee 5 kolonies op een plastic krat (de Ruijter, 2007). Cellepora

Eerst is de kolonie lensvormig, later een dikke korst of een puimsteenachtige cilinder rond draadvormig substraat zoals visnetten. Zoïden ovaal en convex, liggend aan de rand van de kolonie, opgericht in de rest van de kolonie. De ronde opening heeft geen sinus. Proximaal van de opening richt zich een zuilvormige bult op waarin een naar de top gericht avicularium ligt. Frontaal oppervlak glad met enkele marginale poriën. De rand rond de opening is wat opgericht. De polypide draagt 17 tentakels. Broedkamers bolrond, glad met 3 tot 6 onregelmatige frontale poriën in de proximale helft. Embryo’s rood. Ancestrula ovaal met een ronde frontale membraan die omringd is door stekels.
