Colony encrusting, unilaminar to multilaminar; or erect, foliaceous. Frontal shield of autozooids an evenly perforated cryptocyst. Primary orifice with concave or distinctly sinuate border; condyles present. Oral spines present or absent. Ovicells with ectooecium and entooecium both calcified but unfused, the ectooecium typically with pores or larger membranous fenestrae. Avicularia adventitious, often polymorphic. Vertical walls with uniporous or multiporous septula.
